Hole Size: There are two main hole sizes that most lampworkers use: 1/16th of an inch (about 2 mm) and 3/32nds of an inch (about 3mm). When purchasing beads, consider what you will be creating when choosing a hole size.
1/16th inch holes (the smaller size) This size is great to make earrings, there is not much space left around the headpin for the bead to wobble, so it is a secure fit. This size is also good for use on beading wire such as tigertail or accuflex or using stretch cord. They will also fit onto smaller diameter leather (.5-1.5 mm) However the hole may be too small if you want to use heavier leather or other thicker cord or fiber or to put on a chain with a pre-attached clasp. 3/32nds This size will fit more readily onto leather or slightly thicker cord. It is also appropriate to use with tigertail, accuflex, or stretch cord. Earrings may be made with this hole size, but extra measures will need to be taken to ensure a secure fit. Other Hole sizes New sizes are now becoming available such as 1/8th inch and larger sizes. These create a unique opportunity to expand your jewelry making techniques. Also, lampworkers may work "off mandrel" meaning there is no preset size for the hole, they either create a loop in the flame or make a donut bead with the hole in the middle for simple stringing.
